This project is geared towards college level students in their first year of their Associate's degree. The students should have a basic background in using the internet and searching for information on it. However, some students might not be familiar with using Glogster. In order to prepare the students for the project, a brief review of internet search engines will be done. The instructor will familiarize the students with Glogster by showing an example poster and demonstrating how to create one. How can technology best support these methods? Technology will be the medium in which students will find relevant information on an MLT career. They will search sites related to laboratory medicine in order to find all information needed for their Glogster poster. Students will then present their Glogster poster and the information they found to the rest of the class. How can we prepare students adequately to use technologies? The instructor will do a basic review of major search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN, Dogpile, and Ask.com. The instructor will also review using YouTube to find relevant videos. Information on copyrighted material should be introduced to the students through the use of a handout so that students are aware of information they can or cannot use that they find on the internet.
Day 1: The instructor will introduce the project to the students. A timeline will be given to the students so that they are aware of which portion of the project to focus on for the day and the due date. After introducing the project, the instructor will give an overview of Glogster and demonstrate how to add the following design elements into the poster: graphics, text, image, and video. A brief overview of the major internet search engines will be done as well. Students will spend the remaining time researching on the internet what a MLT is, areas of the lab in which a MLT can work, and common tests performed in each area.
Day 2: Instructor will introduce the topic of research for the day - job outlook, salary, and career opportunities for a MLT. The instructor will assign each student a specific MLT career to research so that a variety of options are included in the posters. Students will spend the remaining time researching the topic.
Day 3: Instructor will introduce the topic of research for the day - MLT related videos. Instructor will explain copyrighted material to the students and give them a handout to use to judge whether the material is copyrighted or not. Students should not use any copyrighted videos within their Glogster poster. Students will spend the remaining time finding a video on the internet related to a MLT career.
Day 4: Instructor will introduce the topic of research for the day - educational requirements to become a MLT. Students will spend the remaining time searching for colleges that offer MLT programs and the requirements to obtain a MLT degree. Students must include in their poster an overview of basic classes required as well as any board certification exams that MLTs need to take.
Day 5: Students will spend ten minutes presenting their Glogster poster to the class. After each presentation, the class will participate in a discussion about each student's poster. The discussion will provide a means to review the material on the poster and where the student found the information as well as give some constructive criticism of the poster. After presentations are completed, the instructor will require the students to complete an online Likert survey using SurveyMonkey.
